This wine is bright ruby red in colour. It has a very aromatic nose with pronounced notes of raspberries and blueberries combined with subtle notes of hazelnuts, caramel, toffee and mild toast. The palate is smooth with round tannins, alongside a fresh fruit character. Vibrant acidity gives the wine a bright and perfumed finish.
The grapes come from a single vineyard in Zapallar, situated at 150 metres above sea level and just seven kilometres from the Pacific coast. Montes was the first producer to plant vines in this area. The soils are granite with some clay and silt, and a layer of gravel on the surface that allows moderate drainage. The cool coastal climate and proximity to the mountain range helps to naturally regulate vine growth and yields, resulting in wines with racy acidity, minerality, and highly concentrated aromas and flavours.
The Outer Limits series is a showcase of exploration and innovation. Aurelio Montes’ passion for discovery led him on a quest to find new sites. He wanted to push Chilean viticulture further in the premium direction by finding sites that hadn’t previously been planted. The 45 hectare Zapallar vineyard in the Aconcagua Valley was Montes’ first venture into the ‘outer limits’. It is seven kilometres from the sea, so cool nights and foggy mornings ensure a long growing season
