A highly fragrant, aromatic style, oozing the delicate perfume of lime flowers, white-fleshed nectarine, mandarin and a wild-yeast derived gunflint and lanolin-like savouriness. The palate provides a refreshing burst of anise and hints of wet stone. An invigorating off-dry style that delivers a ying-yang balance of bright, natural acidity, a subliminal touch of sweetness and finishes with mouthwatering vivacity.

The fruit for this wine was grown at the organically-farmed Ashmore Vineyard in Fairhall, adjacent to the mouth of the Brancott Valley. The soils are gravelly clay-loam and conditions are more typical of the Southern Valleys than the Wairau plains. The 24-year-old vines are trained on a two cane VSP trellis with careful shoot and bunch thinning carried out to regulate yields.

Greywacke was created in 2009 by Kevin Judd, the person responsible for the ground-breaking early wines produced in Marlborough. The name ’Greywacke’ was adopted by Kevin for his first Marlborough vineyard, located in Rapaura, in recognition of the prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the vineyard’s soils. ’Greywacke’ is a sedimentary rock that is widely found in Marlborough, consisting of layers of hard grey sandstone and darker mudstone.
