Fresh lemon and lime are harmoniously integrated with honey toast and lanolin notes from bottle age. The palate is rich in flavour, complex and textural while retaining the brilliant acidity present in its youth. Released after five years, as is tradition for Mount Pleasant, this wine will continue to deliver more complex aromas and flavours for the next 15 years.
The site of the Lovedale Vineyard was selected in 1939 by the late Maurice O’Shea. The vineyard was planted after World War II in 1946, and the first Mount Pleasant Lovedale Semillon was made in 1950. It is only when you consider the simple aesthetics of the Lovedale Vineyard and the realities of the Hunter Valley climate, that you can truly appreciate what a visionary Maurice O’Shea was; to see beyond the adversity, plant a vineyard and create a wine some consider as Australia’s greatest white wine. The vineyard is named after the original landholders, the Love family.
Mount Pleasant was founded in 1921 by legendary winemaker Maurice O’Shea, widely recognised as an industry pioneer and the father of modern Australian winemaking. According to James Halliday, who named Mount Pleasant 3rd in the inaugural 100 Top Wineries of Australia in 2023, “there’s an argument to say that Mount Pleasant is Australia’s most important wine estate. It’s certainly ground zero of fine Australian table wine, thanks to the legendary exploits of its founding winemaker, Maurice O’Shea, from the 1920s onwards. But successive winemakers, from Phil Ryan to Jim Chatto to Adrian Sparks, have inched the wines of this estate to higher and higher levels, to the point where now a whole series of its current-release wines are classics in the making
