Pale yellow in colour with greenish hues, the 2021 Sauvignon Blanc has complex aromas of pineapple, guava, pear and hints of grapefruit. On the palate, it is fresh and light-bodied with a vibrant natural acidity and notes of boxwood and tomato leaf. A subtle saline touch on the finish hints at the rocky mountain soils and coastal influence.
The grapes come from a single vineyard situated at 680 metres above sea level, in the Zapallar region of Aconcagua. Just seven kilometres from the Pacific coast, Montes is the first producer to plant vines and make wines here. The soils have a high clay content and the climate is influenced significantly by both the proximity to the ocean and the Andes mountains. The resulting wines have racy acidity, minerality, elegance and distinct aromatics. The grapes are all hand harvested each year in the middle of April, later than other areas, owing to the cool climate.
The Outer Limits series is a showcase of exploration and innovation. Aurelio Montes’ passion for discovery led him on a quest to find new sites. He wanted to push Chilean viticulture further in the premium direction by finding sites that hadn’t previously been planted. The 45 hectare Zapallar vineyard in the Aconcagua Valley was Montes’ first venture into the ‘outer limits’. It is seven kilometres from the sea, so cool nights and foggy mornings ensure a long growing season, making it ideal for Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Syrah.
