Deep straw yellow in colour, this wine is intense on the nose with notes of ripe yellow stone fruits, an elegant flint character and a hint of white pepper. On the palate it is full bodied with fresh acidity and a creamy texture from the oak. The complex profile of stone fruits, wild herbs and fennel combine with a long, almost saline finish. Ready to drink now with good ageing potential for the next six to eight years.
The picturesque, single vineyard ”Salanques” is located 2 km away from Poboleda village, on the hill 575 m above the sea level. The site is surrounded by large pine trees and wild herbs. The Garnacha Blanca and Pedro Ximenes vines were planted in 1962 and Macabeo in 1980. Soil is black slate called “Licorella”. The viticulture is organic and follows the Lunar calendar.
This seven hectare property has been in the Ferrando family for 150 years. Today viticulture, winemaking and blending are overseen by Jordi Masdeu Català, a young Spaniard who spent time selling wine in London, and Alessandro Marchesan. Their shared passion for old Garnacha and Cariñena vines led them to the famous slate, or 'Llicorella' soils of Priorat. The weathered old vines yield tiny quantities of fruit for both Mas La Mola wines.
