Dried cherries, baking spices, and vanilla intermingle with softer notes of espresso bean, pipe tobacco, and lavender. A touch of smoke punctuates the midpalate revealing anise and cocoa. Within a few moments rhubarb appears as do dried ginger and black pepper.

The premise behind the flagship wine is decidedly simple: it’s unapologetically Montelena. With over 40 years of experience in this dynamic and distinctive vineyard, they have recognised the value of blazing their own trail outside of others’ conventions and norms. It takes confidence in our land as well as people, farming and winemaking to buck the trends and fads that perpetually morph and meander through the wine world. Most of all, they set their own standards, not relative to the rest of Napa Valley or the vintage expectations, but based on  potential and drive to make this wine better every year.

Chateau Montelena shot to fame in 1976 at the iconic Judgement of Paris which shook the wine world to its core when their 1973 Napa Valley Chardonnay won first place against an enviable line-up of top French Burgundies. The result was a shock to the wine trade Chateau Montelena shot to fame in 1976 at the iconic Judgement of Paris which shook the wine world to its core when their 1973 Napa Valley Chardonnay won first place against an enviable line-up of top French Burgundies. The result was a shock to the wine trade all over the world and it changed the history of Californian wine and Chateau Montelena forever. They have been making top class wine for over 40 years and have firmly established themselves as an iconic Napa Valley estate. Interestingly the Barretts, owners and chief winemakers here for two generations, have always seen red winemaking as their true calling, but the legend of the 1973 Chardonnay will live on forever.
