A moreish wine, the palate shows plenty of soft and round Chardonnay fruit characters and secondary flavours derived from the minimal solids ferment and extended yeast lees contact. The softer acid profile adds to its drinkability upon release.
The Old Vines Chardonnay block on the HVD vineyard on Hermitage Road was planted in 1908 by the Hunter Valley Distillery Company and is believed to be the oldest still-producing Chardonnay vineyard in the world. Murray Tyrrell was convinced that it was one of the Hunter Valley’s finest white wine vineyards and he purchased it in 1982. This vineyard is situated between two dry creek beds and
features free-draining, sandy soils over coarse river sand. The fruit is hand-picked and then immediately basket pressed. The juice is cold settled for two days before fermentation began in stainless-steel tanks. The fermenting juice is then transferred to French oak barriques, where it matures for eight months.
The Tyrrell family’s association with the grape began with Edward Tyrrell in 1858. Today his legacy lives on through the fourth and fifth generation of the family who collectively manage one of Australia’s oldest and most highly regarded wineries. Tyrrell’s has grown over a century and a half to become one of Australia’s most prestigious winemakers.
